Following the motto “Serving those who have served the Commonwealth and our great Nation,” the Advisory Board for Veterans’ Affairs purpose is to advise the Governor, the General Assembly and the Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs on matters relating to veterans and the administration of veterans services programs to all of Kentucky’s 339,000 veterans. The Advisory Board for Veterans’ Affairs is composed of a seven member board appointed by the Governor, the executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs and the Adjutant General of the Commonwealth.
“It’s a great honor and privilege to be selected to serve fellow veterans at this level,” said SSI President/CEO Scott Shinn. Mr. Shinn began his professional career in the United States Air Force as a Construction Engineer in 1993, serving in Alaska and completing his military career with an honorable discharge in 2002. He has been deployed to South West Asia operations which included Enduring Freedom and Southern Watch. Mr. Shinn has also been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as a Contract Field Service Engineer (FSE) managing, installing, maintaining, and servicing x-ray security equipment utilized by U.S. Military forces and NATO.
After being a contract FSE for 4 years, Mr. Shinn realized the need for a quality company to provide similar services on a larger scale. With his wife, Amanda, he started their Veteran Owned Small Business, SSI, in the basement of their home in December 2009 with 4 contract engineers deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan supporting an x-ray security manufacturer contracted by NATO and U.S. DoD.
“I have no doubt that Scott will be an invaluable addition to the Advisory Board for Veteran’s Affairs. His military background and Garrard County business that helps keep our men and women in uniform safe around the globe make him uniquely qualified for this role. I’m proud of Scott and think the Governor made an excellent choice in choosing him for this role,” said Garrard County Judge/Executive John Wilson.
Mr. Shinn has supported U.S. and Kentucky veterans prior to this appointment. With this appointment, Mr. Shinn will utilize his military, business, and philanthropic experiences to serve the veterans of the community and the entire Commonwealth.
